Product Description

AMOXICILLIN CAPSULES
500mg/Capsule
PRESCRIBING INFORMATION:
Amoxicillin (6R)6-[a-D(4-Hydroxyphenyl) glyeylamino] penicillianic acid) is an aminopenicillin with action and uses very similar to those of ampicillin.
Absorption from the gastrointestinal tract is better than seen with ampicillin and is less affected by food.
COMPOSTION:
Each capsule contains Amoxicillin trihydrate equivalent to amoxicillin anhydrous 250mg or 500mg.
INDICATIONS:
Amoxicillin is used in the treatment of a variety of infections due to susceptible organisms, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, gonorrhoea, enteric infections, meningitis and septicaemia. The dosage of amoxicillin will depend on the severity of the disease, the age of the patient and then renal function.
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Hypersensitivity to penicillin
ADVERSE EFFECTS:
Allergic reactions may occur in sensitized persons. Skin rashes are amongst the most common side effects Gastrointestinal effects particularly diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting may occur. The incidence of diarrhoea is less with Amoxicillin than Ampicillin.
Superinfections with non-susceptible organisms may occur particularly with prolonged use.
PRECAUTIONS:
Amoxicillin should preferably not be given to patients with mononucleosis since they are susceptible to Amoxicillin induced skin rashes.
DRUG INTERACTIONS:
Amoxicillin may decrease efficacy of oestrogen containing oral contraceptives and it may also affect the absorption of other drugs due to its effect on the gastrointestinal flora.
PREGNANCY AND LACTATION:
The disposition is altered in pregnancy resulting in less than adequate antibacterial concentration. Amoxicillin is excreted in very small amounts in breast milk, the amount likely to be well below the normal paediatric dose.
DOSAGE AND ADMNISTRATON:
The usual oral dose is Amoxicillin 250 to 500 mg every 8 hours. Children up to 10 years of age may be given 125 to 250 mg every 8 hours; under 20kg body weight a dose of 20 to 40 mg per kg daily has been suggested.
STORAGE:
Store below 25ºC, in a dry place. Protect from light.
