What is Omeprazole? Omeprazole is a medication that reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It belongs to a group of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).
Indications: Omeprazole is used for the treatment of:
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): A condition where stomach acid leaks into the esophagus, causing heartburn and irritation.
- Peptic ulcers: Sores that develop on the lining of the stomach or the first part of the small intestine.
- Helicobacter pylori eradication: Omeprazole is used in combination with antibiotics to eliminate the bacteria Helicobacter pylori that can cause ulcers.
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: A condition in which the stomach produces too much acid.
How to Take Omeprazole:
- Dosage for Adults:
- For GERD: 20 mg once daily for up to 4 weeks.
- For peptic ulcers: 20 mg to 40 mg once daily, depending on the condition.
- For Helicobacter pylori eradication: Typically combined with antibiotics (e.g., clarithromycin), usually taken for 7-14 days.
- For Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: 60 mg once daily, adjusted according to the doctor's recommendation.
- How to Take:
- Swallow the capsules whole with a glass of water.
- Do not crush or chew the capsules.
- It can be taken with or without food.
- For Children: The dose for children will depend on the specific condition being treated and the child's age/weight. Consult a doctor for exact dosage.
Precautions:
- Before Taking Omeprazole, Tell Your Doctor if You Have:
- Allergies to omeprazole or any other ingredients in the capsule.
- Liver disease, as the dosage may need to be adjusted.
- Low magnesium levels in the blood.

- Signs of liver problems (yellowing of the skin/eyes, dark urine).
Warnings:
- Long-term use of omeprazole should be monitored by a healthcare professional.
- If you experience persistent side effects or allergic reactions, stop taking the medication and consult your doctor.
Storage:
- Store at room temperature (15-30°C or 59-86°F).
- Keep out of the reach of children.
