Product Description

AMPICILLIN CAPSULES
COMPOSITION:
Each capsule contains ampicillin trihydrate equivalent to ampicillin 500 mg.
PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION:
Ampicillin is a broad-spectrum bactericidal penicillin.
DIRECTIONS:
Indicated in the treatment of infections due to susceptible strains of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Ampicillin should not be given to patients known to be allergic to penicillin nor, in the neonatal period, to infants born of hypersensitive mothers.
Ampicillin should not be given to patients with infectious mononucleosis as they are particularly susceptible to ampicillin-induced rashes, patients with lymphatic leukemia and patients with hyper ur icaemia being treated with allopurino. may be at increased risk of developing ampicillin-induced skin rashes.
WARNINGS:
Ampicillin can cause reactions typical of penicillin allergy. In patients with a history of penicillin or cephalosporin allergy ampicillin should be used with caution.
DOSAGE AND INSTRUCTIONS:
Adults: 250 mg to 750 mg every 6 hours.
Children 0-6 years: 62.5 mg to 187.5 mg every 6 hours.
Children 7-10 years: 125 mg to 375 mg every 6 hours.
Children over 10 years: 250 mg to 750 mg every 6 hours.
In severe infections doses may be increased or high doses administered parenterally. Ampicillin should be taken 30 minutes to 1 hour before meals. In patients with renal impairment the dosage may be reduced if necessary.
SIDE EFFECTS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS:
Overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms (aerobacter aerogens, pseudomonas, candida, etc.) may occur and in these circumstances, ampicillin treatment should be discontinued and specific or supportive therapy instituted. Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, heartbum and pruritis ani may occur. When ampicillin is administered to a hypersensitive patient, allergic reactions may occur. Urticaria and maculopapluar skin eruptions are common and exfoliative dermatitis, eosinophilia, angioneurotic edema, erythema multiforme, fever, and swollen joints may occur.
Allergic reactions which may be fatal such as anaphylaxis may occur. These reactions may be common after parenteral use but may also occur after oral administration. If serious anaphylactic reaction occurs, ampicillin should be discontinued and the patient treated with adrenaline, corticosteroids and antihistamines, Onset of symptoms varies: it may occur in
a few days from the start of treatment or not until therapy with a penicillin derivative is resumed on a subsequent occasion. In cases of ampicillin treatment of the mononuclei a rash usually appears. Severe pseudomembaranous colitis may occur. Elevated serum aminotransferase concentrations have been reported.
Use with caution in patients with syphylis as Jarish-Herxheimer reaction may occur.
INTERACTIONS:
Ampicillin may decrease the effectiveness of estrogen containing oral contraceptives.
Due to the effect of ampicillin on the gastrointestinal flora, the absorption of other medicines may be affected.
KNOWN SYMPTOMS OF OVERDOSAGE AND SPECIFIC TREATMENT CONDITIONS:
See "side effects and special precautions". If a serious allergic reaction occurs the medicine should be discontinued.
Treatment is supportive and symptomatic.
